REFUGEE BOAR
Former gamekeeper jailed after stabbing wild boar in sickening attack A former gamekeeper who filmed himself stabbing a wild boar has been jailed and banned from keeping dogs for ten years. Luke Rix kept videos of the savage attacks on wildlife but was caught red-handed after his ex-partner found them and reported him to the RSPCA. When police raided his home, they confiscated his phone and found sickening footage, including a video of a bleeding boar squealing in pain while two dogs latched on its neck and haunches. Rix, 32, was sent to prison for 18 months after admitting to causing unnecessary suffering to the boar and his dog Gunner. Rix, from Oxhill, which is just over the border in Warwickshire, was also banned from keeping dogs for ten years after the court heard he regarded hunting as 'a way of life' and was likely to re-offend if he was allowed to keep dogs again, reports GloucestershireLive. His dogs were examed by a vet following the raid at his address in Moreton-on-Marsh. source link
LAZY MONKEY
Mumbai: Stop feeding the monkeys! You are making them obese, say experts Debilitating state of obese female macaque in Deonar is a cautionary tale for well-meaning citizens, say vets and wildlife experts. Many kind-hearted people take to feeding stray monkeys, but a city-based NGO has found this has led to them getting obese. A monkey weighing 15 kg — nearly four times the average normal adult weight for a female of its kind — was recently rescued from Deonar. The find has once again led to experts stressing the need for humans to avoid feeding wild animals. Talking to mid-day, the President of NGO RAWW, Pawan Sharma said, “A few days ago we were handed the critical case of a rescued bonnet macaque by the Forest Department for further treatment. The primate was found limping due to a severe injury on its hind limbs by the locals near the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).” The monkey underwent a detailed medical examination at veterinarian Dr Rina Dev's clinic. source link
FLOATING POLAR
Polar bear hell: An ice pack that keeps receding Sprawled on rocky ground far from sea ice, a lone Canadian polar bear sits under a dazzling sun, his white fur useless as camouflage. It's midsummer on the shores of the Hudson Bay and life for the enormous male has been moving in slow motion, far from the prey that keeps him alive: seals. Every year from late June, when the bay ice disappears -- shrinking until it dots the blue vastness like scattered confetti -- the bears must move onto shore to begin a period of forced fasting. But that period is lasting longer and longer as temperatures rise. source link
RELEASED TURTLE
Hong Kong animal concern groups beg people to stop the ‘mercy release’ of turtles At a drainage pool near a popular hiking site in Tai Po , a group of volunteers armed with snorkels, nets and gloves wades through the muddy water to find dozens of turtles left behind. The red-eared slider turtles were released into the wild through a practice known as “mercy release” - a concept rooted in a Buddhist belief that freeing animals brings good fortune. But many animals are being intentionally captured and sold just to be set free, animal experts said, while the turtles often get hurt or even die after being left in waterways. source link
STRAY DOG
Hong Kong dog shelter struggling to provide as number of animals doubles while volunteers move abroad amid pandemic The fate of a Hong Kong dog shelter hangs in the balance as the number of animals under its care has doubled after many pet owners moved abroad while volunteers also left the city during the pandemic, leaving the foundation struggling to operate on limited manpower. The Sai Kung Stray Friends Foundation in Tai Lam Wu village in eastern New Territories had just over 100 dogs two years ago. But the number has doubled since the pandemic began after owners left the city or suffered financial difficulties and could no longer raise their pets. “We do everything here,” shelter founder Narelle Pamuk said. “We rescue and bring them back here, we provide their medical treatment, their healthcare and rehabilitation, right through to their adoption.” source link
ABUSED CAT
Highway the Abused Cat’s Life Takes Happy Turn Thanks to Rescuers Here is the story of a black-and-white cat named Highway, and at first, it’s heartbreaking and highly disturbing. Fortunately, due to the kindness of rescuers and the generosity of strangers, this kitty’s life takes a wonderful turn. So, how did this cat receive his name? Highway received his name from the New Canaan Police Department, who found the cat inside a pet carrier. Then, the animal control officer took the cat straightaway to the veterinarian. From there, rescuers from the nonprofit Pets Animal Welfare Society of Norwalk (PAWS) would need to raise funds for lifesaving and expensive health care. On January 24, someone left Highway at a rest stop near Interstate 95 in the coastal town of Darien, Connecticut. That day, it was freezing cold, with temperatures not exceeding 31 degrees. source link
TUSKLESS ELEPHANT
Elephant in Kerala dies after suspected firecrackers hidden in fruit exploded in her mouth The death of a pregnant wild elephant, suspected to have been fatally injured after eating fruit stuffed with firecrackers that exploded in her mouth, has stirred public outrage in India as authorities investigate the incident. The elephant died on May 27 while standing in the middle of a river in the southern state of Kerala, four days after she was found injured, according to Ashique Ali, a local forest officer. “The postmortem report says that there was an explosion in the mouth. We have not caught any of the culprits. We don’t know yet what caused the explosion,” Ali said, adding that the animal was found to be one-month pregnant. Kerala’s chief wildlife warden, Surendra Kumar, said the case is being investigated. source link
SKINLESS TIGER
Gruesome discovery of Czech tiger farm exposes illegal trade in heart of Europe The first thing that hit the inspectors was the smell. It was a sweltering midsummer day in Prague, and they had just opened an unplugged freezer filled with the rotting remains of tigers, lions and cougars. Pavla Rihova, the lead environmental inspector on the scene, said she had never seen anything like it. In a shed next to the house they found a freshly killed tiger, shot through the neck so as not to damage its valuable pelt. In the same room was a heavy duty cooking pot on a gas hob, filled with the unidentified meat and bones of animals. The raid was the culmination of five years of work carried out by the Czech police, customs authorities and environmental inspectorate, who say they have uncovered an organised ring of Czech and Vietnamese criminals illegally killing and processing protected big cats for the traditional Chinese medicine market. source link
FINLESS SHARK
European countries dominate half of Asian shark fin trade, report reveals Despite nearly a third of shark species nearing extinction, Spain supplied 51,000 tonnes of shark fins from 2003-20, says IFAW European countries are selling so many shark fins to Asia that they dominate nearly half the trade, a study has found. Shark populations continue to decline, driven by the global shark fin trade. Last year, scientists found a third of sharks and ray species have been overfished to near-extinction, jeopardising the health of entire ocean ecosystems and food security for many countries. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) analysed almost two decades of customs data in three major Asian trading hubs from 2003 to 2020. It found that while the main market for fin-related products is in Asia, EU countries – led by Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, France and Italy – are a significant player in supplying this legal market. China is a big supplier of shark fins but was not covered by the study. source link
